Immigrants from Mars

Immigration is a very sensitive topic to bring up in the United States. The politicians and citizens that are for an amnesty to be granted to immigrants that are here illegally argue with emotions and involve many feelings. The citizens and politicians that are against immigrants argue with the facts about crime and negativity only and don’t look at the positive effects that it could have in this nation. The United States has had past issues with immigrants. Be it the Japanese and Chinese during world war 2, or the Russians during the cold war. Each race was prosecuted because of the events going on in the world at the time. Eventually the attack on these people faded and they were forgiven. They were given amnesty. It is riveting that amnesty is given to others within a couple of years, yet there is still illegal immigration happening in a country that was built off immigration.

It is understandable that people want to better themselves, especially if in their country there is little to no success. This is why the immigrants in the United States are here, to find their way to success, to fill in the yearning for their family. When someone flees from their country, and wants to start a new life, it is because something went incredibly wrong in their homeland. Be it the economy is in poverty, the crime rate is escalating, or there are no opportunities for success. That immigrant should be considered a refugee. This nation had a welcoming attitude and opened its arms to all of the immigrants when the people of this nation put up the Statue of Liberty. It is as Nicholas Kristof said, “Are people trying to get into it or out of it?”(Kristof pg.1). These illegal aliens, as some people in the united states like to call them, are trying to come into the country because it gives a ray of new hope. Not all of them come to commit crimes. Not all of them are good for nothing people. Anyone, immigrant or not, is capable of committing crimes, anyone is capable of achieving greatness in life, that person just has to want it. Even when they are not legal, they contribute to this country economically and culturally.

According to the math done by Ed Butowsky, giving amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants will cost roughly 70 billion dollars (Butowski pg1). That is correct. On the other hand, if those 5 million immigrants are full time workers, and they earn the average $50,000 a year, and the country does take the 25% as Butowski states in his article, then that 70 billion debt will be paid in full within 2 years if not less. Do the math, $12,500 multiplied by 5 million immigrants is $62.5 billion dollars. Not only will the $70 billion be paid off in full by the second year but there will also be $55 billion left over with which the government can start paying off the 18 trillion dollar national debt. This is only through income taxes, if the immigrants were given the work permits, then there will be a “$45 billion” contribution through “payroll taxes” (Kristof, pg 2). These arguments about the country losing money have just been turned to shambles by using the same thinking and math many politicians use. Except, for the fact that people like Butowsky do not look deeper into the matter because they have a set mind to find what helps them show the negativity of amnesty towards illegal immigrants. Of course the math and reasoning is indeed correct and shows a good understanding of what will happen with amnesty, but it lacked the numbers that mattered, the numbers that would help the economy of this nation in the long run. Within two years the immigrants that are granted amnesty will pay $125 billion, and yes that is every two years. The debt will decrease little by little those 18 trillion will be less and less.

What more can an immigrant do to show that he/she is an asset to this nation and not a “parasite” like some people would think (Kristof pg2). Crime rates rise and drop as the economy worsens or as it gets better. It isn’t directly influenced by the number of immigrants in the United States. There is an estimated “12 million illegal immigrants” (Butowsky pg 1). Out of the estimated 319 million people in this nation, which is a small percentage. And an even smaller percent are those are criminals. This nation was built through immigration, it is a place where cultural diversity is accepted and encouraged. Expecting great achievements to come out of a country where diversity is fruitful yet the politicians are against a new change .Don’t make it just a thought, immigrants like all the people in this nation, deserve forgiveness and their amnesty as they risked losing loved ones and their home to find a place that is supposed to be great.

  1. You evidence helped with this arugement. You used the right amount of evidence. In regards to your argument, it was pretty good. The evidence used in this argument was appropriate for you standing position on the topic. Your conclusion was pretty outstanding. The whole argument had pretty good evidence and logic.

  2. It's great how you focus on more topics than money. Reminding the people that this nation was founded upon immigrants is a great way to prove your point. It will be be best to use a different font and to space out your paragraphs a bit more. Also it's good how immigrants can be used to help this nation to get back on its feet. You make a persuasive point on how politics keep using the same excuses to keep illegal aliens out of the United States. Also, kudos to pointing out that people from America can also commit crimes. Not all immigrants are criminals.

  3. From the start to the end, there was a strong and diligent tone throughout. In paragraph three, it talks about how illegal immigrants can help pay off America's debt. In contrast to this point, there are many assumptions made. Not each of the 5 million immigrants can work because not all are adults. In addition, not each illegal immigrant can earn $50,000 a year. Someone who qualifies in the middle class earns on average $50,000 a year. In the real world, majority of the illegal immigrants would be classified as lower class thus making less income.

  4. Your claims are very true and knowledgeable, its great that you brought up math for both sides on immigration. Another great claim you mention is that people who are against immigration fail to think deeper about amnestying immigrants. Also, it is nice to read that you acknowledge that immigrants come here to better themselves and while they do that they help the United States as well. One can agree as well that most immigrants do not come here to commit crime, because why would they if it risks being deported. The evidence also helps tremendously because you bring both aspects to the argument. Lastly, another great claim you mention is that most immigrants are not parasites but legitimate assets.

  5. You did a good job stating how illegal immigrants do not correlate to the amount of crime rate in America. Your argument had very strong points to back up what you were stating which was really good. Your argument also did a good job at stating how immigrants actually help the United States get back up on the horse and eliminate the debt that it has.

    1. The points made in this piece are very straightforward. The attempt to address Butowsky's math with more math was very intriguing and can be persuasive if used correctly. It is true that Butowsky may be set in his own ways, he should look deeper into the matter. He uses math to show the negativity amnesty will bring, but this argument uses those same methods that are being disagreed with. This paper's math is based on "if" something will happen. There are so many other factors that need to be included such as wages or if a sufficient amount of full-time job openings can even be offered by new businesses.

  7. You did a good job on illustrating that not all immigrants are criminals and useless. The essay shows how immigrants can carry their own weight over the years. This ultimately helps out the economy because now we can start decreasing our national deficit. You mentioned that America was founded by immigrants making your position stronger. Over all your essay was well done. But you should consider changing the format and color of your letters to make it easier to read.

  8. All the points stayed were very strong. In the second paragraph, it was great that you stated the reason why an illegal immigrant doesn't leave their country just because. Everyone is striving to have a better life. When money is mentioned everything was stated clearly. Not only was it clear but by providing more math made your point true. You did a great job by allowing your readers understand that crimes can happen by American citizens as well and not just illegal immigrants.

  9. Your introduction was very clear and strong. You mentioned some good background information that reflects off of what America and the illegal immigrants of today are going through. You point was then made stronger by mentioning that illegal immigrants are the ones who founded this land and its ridiculous to even have to have to fight for rights they should rightfully have to begin with. Good insight was offered not only in the conclusion but throughout the entire argument. Everything was clear and straightforward and nonetheless, very well written.

  10. Your argument was well said, your provide the right amount of evidence in your argument, you didn't just focus on one side but you went other the positives and the negatives of undocumented immigrants being in the states. You stated stronger from the being and the evidence you provided helped get your ideas through. Just keep in mind that not all immigrants are able to work either some are not old enough or some are disabled to work so that average of earnings they provided isn't exact.

  11. This argument was well developed and provided enough evidence to make it strong. Although money is what the U.S.A is all about, is there anything else granting amnesty will do to benefit the nation? And what guarantees these immigrants full time jobs anyways? "if those 5 million immigrants are full time workers, and they earn the average $50,000 a year, and the country does take the 25% as Butowski states in his article, then that 70 billion debt will be paid in full within 2 years if not less" These statistics are only focusing on full time jobs, and not all full time jobs guarantee 50000 dollars a year, not including part time jobs which pay even less.

  12. Illegal immigration does cause a lot of debt in the nation. however, as explained above, amnesty can contribute to this debt and even create more income for the nation. The evidence is clear, within two years immigrants can work as hard as they already do and show amnesty opponents that they are a great investment. Good usage of logic to support a legalization !

  13. America is definitely the place that give many hope and is room for being able to be successful. Americans should be proud to allow illegal immigrants to come here to make a better living, but instead they prefer to give the whole situation an hard time. Accept that American is the land of diversity and embrace it. Again, Kristof's calculations is just another assurance that we can benefit from granting Amnesty and that we can afford it.

  14. One part is missing, you focus in the positive things that a legal status for immigrants will bring to the country and forgot the benefits that will bring in international relationships with other countries, for example, immigrant Arabs can facilitate the petroleum commerce between the two countries.
